Please be prompt.  Audition requirements are listed below. 
Please note, this is an adult production and while there are children in the show, there will be late rehearsals, especially as we near opening.  We will attempt to get the children out as early as possible, however, it is important to understand the evening expectations.

Please be prepared to stick around after your initial audition is finished. A dance call will be held following the cold readings.

Rehearsal Schedule
– Rehearsals will begin in August. Exact date is not determined yet.
– Regular rehearsal schedule will be Sunday, Monday, Wednesday, Thursday. 
– Not all actors will be needed at every rehearsal, but please anticipate being needed for every rehearsal when organizing your personal schedule.  Even after the schedule is set, we ask you to do your best to leave those days clear in case of schedule changes.

AUDITION REQUIREMENTS:

PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING CAREFULLY

  • Please prepare 16-32 bars of a song in the style of the show – nothing from the show please.
  • Children – please prepare either a short monologue or a long joke to perform
  • An accompanist will be provided by the theatre. Please bring your own sheet music.
  • Singing to tracks or a cappella will not be allowed.
  • Please wear appropriate clothing and footwear for dancing.FROM OUR DIRECTOR:
  • All roles are available for casting.
  • Bring a headshot / resume if you have one.
  • Be prepared to do cold readings from the script and to stay for a short dance call.
  • Please note, the readings are not specific to the characters you may be considered for but are general examples of language from the show.
  • Please be prepared to outline possible rehearsal conflicts. The standard rehearsal schedule will be Sundays, Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays but there may be a need to select other days so we will be looking for all conflicts from August through November.  Schedules are subject to change and we ask for transparency and flexibility.
  • Please note that any conflicts given to production staff after rehearsals have begun may or may not be excused. These will be determined at the discretion of the director. Please make sure you have checked all school schedules, field trips, dance recitals, school concerts, vacations, work conferences, other production schedules that involve you, etc. While you are a volunteer in this, please understand that this is a serious commitment and your attendance impacts many many people.  We have to work around the schedules of dozens of people and each unexpected conflict makes a difference.

  • Alice Murphy (30 / strong, rich alto with some upper register)
    Plays Alice at age 38–an editor of a southern literary magazine; intelligent, attractive, professional–but with an air of melancholy. The same actress plays Young Alice at age 16–rebellious, high-spirited, sexually forward, adventurous–looking to break out of small-town life and experience the world. Strong singer comfortable in folk / bluegrass.
  • Margo Crawford (early 20s / 2 nd soprano)
    A small-town bookstore owner; a childhood friend of Billy who now harbors romantic feelings towards him; a natural beauty with a keen intellect.
  • Mama Murphy (40s-50s / Alto) 
    Alice’s mother. A caretaker to her family and her rural community. A warm, loving, sensible woman. Hardworking, with great inner strength and compassion.
  • Lucy Grant (early 20s / Alto) A junior editor at a literary magazine. An ambitious, professional young “modern” career woman of the 1940’s. Strong, forthright and provocative with a sharp sense of humor.
  • Florence – (20s / variable voice range) 
    an employee at Margo’s bookstore and a childhood friend of both Billy and Margo.
  • Edna – (variable age/alto) an employee at Margo’s bookstore.

    A clerk at the Office of Records in Raleigh

  • Billy Cane (Early 20s / High Baritone)
    A soldier returning home from WWII; an aspiring young writer; fresh, open, optimistic, charming, and a little naïve.
  • Jimmy Ray Dobbs (30s / Tenor)
    Plays Jimmy Ray in his early 20s in flashbacks–Mayor Dobbs’ son and young Alice beau; handsome, boyishly charming, well-built, and intelligent; from a family of wealth and power and is being groomed by his father for a similar future in the family business; an independent thinker who is not afraid to stand up to his father for what he believes in; he has a sense of personal responsibility and morality as well as a deep reserve of passion and emotion. The same actor will also play an adult Jimmy Ray at age 40.
  • Mayor Josiah Dobbs (50’s / Baritone)
    A political and financial powerbroker– distinguished, even elegant, an imposing and controlling presence; has a genuine interest in protecting his son’s future and his family name, but in doing so, is ultimately pushed to a point of extreme and irrevocable cruelty.
  • Daddy Murphy (50 – 60s / Baritone)
    Alice’s father; an authoritative and a stern disciplinarian; devoutly religious, hard-working, a poor but proud farmer.
  • Daddy Cane – (late 40s – 50s / Baritone)
    Billy’s father. A widower. Spry, good looking. Kind hearted, if a bit lonely.
  • Daryl Ames – (30s / Tenor)
    An assistant at a literary magazine. Funny, with a dry and officious sense of humor. Insecure, and perhaps a bit socially awkward, but endearing and innately likeable.
  • Stanford (variable age and voice range)
    Loyal assistant to Mayor Josiah Dobbs
  • Dr. Norquist (variable age and voice range) 
    The local family doctor in Zebulon
  • Max – (20s / variable voice range)
    a customer at Margo’s bookstore, at first, he has a crush on Margo, but later becomes Edna’s beau.

REHEARSALS: Tentatively scheduled for Sunday-Wednesday beginning on or shortly after October 29th. With a break over the Thanksgiving and Winter holidays. Please be prepared to list conflicts with rehearsal dates at time of audition.

ROLES: 4-12 women and 7-12 men. Approximal half of the roles are gender neutral and very flexible on age

BEATRICE: (Female, 30-45) Leonato’s niece and Hero’s cousin. Beatrice is “a pleasant-spirited lady” with a very sharp tongue. She is generous and loving, but, like Benedick, continually mocks other people with elaborately tooled jokes and puns. She wages a war of wits against Benedick and often wins the battles. At the outset of the play, she appears content never to marry.

HERO: (Female, 19-30) cousin to Beatrice, daughter of Leonato, lovely, charming, gentle, kind, but has backbone, in love with Claudio, innocent of any wrongdoing, she is slandered by Claudio’s enemies and is devastated by the attacks on her good name.

MARGARET: (Female, 20-50) Hero’s gentlewoman, a woman, not a girl, but definitely not an old maid, is sensual, robust, and has a hard time keeping a cap on her sexuality, not cheap or tawdry, just possessing a sexuality that is present, if perhaps inconsistent with the morality of the court.

URSULA: (Female, 30-50) Hero’s gentlewoman, a calming maternal influence in a household dominated by authoritative men, is somewhat old fashioned, perhaps even a little starchy, a woman of quiet faith.

BENEDICK: (Male, 30-45) An aristocratic soldier who has recently been fighting under Don Pedro, and a friend of Don Pedro and Claudio. Benedick is very witty, always making jokes and puns. He carries on a “merry war” of wits with Beatrice, but at the beginning of the play he swears he will never fall in love or marry.

LEONATO: (Male, 50+) Governor of Messina, father to Hero and uncle to Beatrice, well-respected and values his good name, commanding and powerful, but also possessing a playful side, generous toward his friends and brutal with his enemies, capable of great gentleness and humility and terrible rage.

DON PEDRO: (Male, 30-50) Prince of Aragon, a soldier, Benedick’s contemporary and commander, they are old friends and comrades in arms, is wealthy, privileged, charming, courteous, and virile, possesses an innate sense of power and authority, which he wears with great ease, a man comfortable in his own skin.

CLAUDIO: (Male, 19-30) a young Florentine soldier, in love with Hero, cut from a rougher cloth than his comrades, but can still move seamlessly between the macho world of the military and the world of the court, handsome, charming, masculine, a touch of grit, a true believer in honor and virtue, his strict moral code sometimes clouds his judgment and causes him to act rigidly and impetuously. Must be able to sing.

DOGBERRY: (gender neutral) the master constable of Messina, dedicated, determined, but clumsy, proud, sincere, he takes his job extremely seriously, eager to impress the court, and will go to absurd lengths to do so, his attempts to speak formally and elaborately are riddled with misunderstandings and malapropisms, a role for an actor with great physical and verbal comedic skill.

DON JOHN: (Male, 30-50) Don Pedro’s illegitimate half-brother, melancholy, brooding, wily, envious of his brother’s status and authority, he schemes to get back at him by ruining the happiness of his brother’s friends, an excellent mind for planning and calculating, and an eye for pinpointing the weaknesses of others.

ANTONIO: (Male, 60-70) Leonato’s older brother, although he is perhaps past his physical prime, he is still fierce and commanding, a patriarch who is a little out of step with the times, as his place in society is gradually being usurped by a new, younger guard, has a passionate temper that sometimes overwhelms him.

CONRAD & BORACHIO: cohorts of Don John, they are not in the court but more than happy to move in those circles, it gives them the reflected aura of respectability that they do not possess on their own, they are players, slick, tough and edgy, into drinking, sex, power and money; not necessarily in that order.

VERGES: Dogberry’s hapless sidekick, not the sharpest tool in the kit, together they make a classic double act, this is a role for a character actor who with excellent verbal and physical comedic skills.

FRIAR FRANCIS: (Male, 30-60) compassionate, level-headed, wise, a strong believer in the redemptive power of love, he sets in motion a plot to reunite Hero and Claudio, is a man of true faith and considerable imagination.

BALTHAZAR: Balthazar is the play’s musician. He lends music to the prince’s company and gives a serene atmosphere to Messina. The ability to play a stringed instrument would be a plus

SEXTON: The sexton helps in examining Borachio and Conrade in jail. He shows Dogberry how to take care of the criminals and brings word of the occurrences at the infamous wedding ceremony. He looks down upon Dogberry and eventually captures Don John.

MESSENGERS: Throughout the play, several messengers come onstage and off to report important events to the characters, from the arrival of Don Pedro and his men, to the capture of Don John.

WATCHMEN, OATCAKE, SEACOLE: Dogberry employs a few night watchmen to keep an eye on the happenings of Messina during this very joyous wedding time. They capture Borachio and Conrade on word of Borachio’s affair with Margaret and the framing of Hero.

What is the summer intensive?

The intensive is ten weeks of rehearsals and workshops culminating in a full scale production of “We the People”. Participants will be working with top industry professionals to both strengthen and broaden their understanding of their craft.

Our goal is to offer a program like no other on the shoreline by bringing in Working Actors, Agents/Casting Directors and Managers from NYC, LA and Nashville to teach industry workshops. Not only will students develop their singing, acting and dancing skills, they will also learn how to present themselves at auditions and interviews along with the ins and outs  of the business

 

Who is the program for?.

Grades 6 through 12. We are accepting 32 applicants. 

When does the intensive begin?

Rehearsals will begin on June 12th. There will be no rehearsals during the July 4th week.

When will rehearsals be?

The rehearsal schedule will be handed out at the first rehearsal.

Rehearsals will be Monday through Wednesday, 5pm to 8pm, with some possible added Thursday rehearsals. The schedule will be handed out at the 1st rehearsal on June 12th. 

July & August rehearsals will be located at the Legacy Dance Studio in North Haven, CT.

June rehearsals will either be in Madison or North Haven – TBA

When will performances be?

Saturday, August 26th there will be both a matinee and evening performance. 

Sunday, August 27th there will be a matinee.

PEACEMAKER.CALL FOR DIRECTORS

The PeaceMaker Project centers on the professional production of a “new” work for musical theater: PeaceMaker: The Dreams of Humanity’s Child. This musical, this opera, this performance piece, is designed to be entertaining and engaging while delivering a very powerful message: that we need to care for the EarthMother and all our relations, that each of us can be a peace maker. Therefore, the goal of the Peacemaker Project is to deliver that message to as wide and diverse and audience as possible.\ To accomplish this goal, we will recruit professional collaborators of like mind, body and spirit: musicians, actors, singers, dancers, directors, managers, designers, technicians. We will provide resources for collaborators to facilitate their success: musical scores, demo orchestrations, production notes, individual and group coaching, technical support. We will establish a “doable” schedule for busy professionals, a schedule that requires a minimum of people being in the same place, at the same time, doing the same thing. We will do this by rightly expecting that professionals, given proper resources and support, will come to a rehearsal situation fully prepared.

Thus, we believe that such a group can and will be able to bring the individual pieces together in a very short time…in fact, in four days for phase one of our project.

We will articulate a business plan appropriate to a “non-profit” model and, at the same time, designed to generate sufficient revenues to provide appropriate and “fair-market value” compensation for professional participants. In other words, we think pros should be paid for their work and we intend to our best to see that this happens. Simply put…we hope to generate enough revenues from the sale of tickets and other fund-raising activities to cover production expenses and still leave enough resources to compensate professional participants in a “fair-market value” way as well as support the larger goals of the Peaceful Educator Foundation. How exactly this will be determined has not been determined, yet…however, the spirit of our intention is fairness and the details will be clearly articulated and understood among and between participants before commitments are required.

Hearts tells the story of Donald Waldman, a “Forward Observer” in the U.S. army in World War II. Shuttling back and forth from 1944 to the mid-90’s, Donald tells of his tumultuous relationships with his best friends Babe, Herbie, and Ruby, and with his long-suffering wife Evelyn, during his 50-year struggle to come to terms with what he did and saw in the war. Finally, a meeting with another survivor brings Donald the peace that evaded him his whole life in this funny, sad, and moving drama.

Roles:

Donald Waldman, from the age of 18 to his early 70’s. Donald is gruff, blunt, defiant, vulnerable, and brave.

Babe, Donald’s best friend, from the age of 18 to his early 70’s. Babe is straightforward, brave, a peacekeeper. The actor who plays Babe will play a dozen additional small roles.

Herbie, Donald’s close friend, from the age of 18 to his early 70’s. Herbie is blunt, impatient, confident. The actor who plays Herbie will also play three supporting roles (Sgt. Reineck; Mike, a soldier; and Donald’s Son) and four additional small roles.

Ruby, Donald’s close friend, from the age of 18 to his early 50’s. Ruby is brave, proud, hard, a joker. The actor who plays Ruby will also play two supporting roles (Cpt. Schwinky; Shmuel, a concentration camp survivor) and five additional small roles.

Evelyn, Donald’s wife, from her early 20’s to her mid 60’s. Evelyn is confident, sensitive, straightforward, proud. The actor who plays Evelyn will also play a supporting role (Donald’s Granddaughter) and four additional small roles.

Note: As the characters’ ages range from 18 to 20 to their early 70’s, there will be great potential for flexibility in the ages of the cast members. We are looking for actors who can demonstrate inventiveness in differentiating multiple characters and various ages.

Audition Process: At auditions, actors will read sides from the play, monologues which will be provided at auditions (no memorization or advance preparation needed), and will participate in improvisational games. Dress for movement please.

If actors auditioning on Sunday night can make themselves available for Monday night as well, that effort would be greatly appreciated; however, auditioners’ presence one night only will have no adverse effect on casting.

The Exit 7 Players of Ludlow, MA are announcing auditions for A CHORUS LINE on Sunday, January 4 and Monday, January 5, 2015.

A Chorus Line is a musical with music by Marvin Hamlisch, lyrics by Edward Kleban and a book by James Kirkwood, Jr. and Nicholas Dante. A CHORUS LINE is a stunning musical-verite about a chorus audition for a Broadway musical. It tells of the achingly poignant ambitions of professional Broadway gypsies to land a job in the show, and is a powerful metaphor for all human aspiration.

Memorable musical numbers include I Can Do That, At the Ballet, Dance: Ten; Looks: Three, The Music and the Mirror, What I Did for Love, One (Singular Sensation) and I Hope I Get It. It is a brilliantly complex fusion of dance, song and compellingly authentic drama.

While obviously being a show for dancers, we would like to encourage actor/singers who feel they have the ability to learn and perform choreography and convincingly portray a Broadway dancer. What is important to us is that you are comfortable up on stage and that you can perform with the talent, confidence, energy, and stamina required for the show.

Auditions:
Sunday January 4: 6pm
Monday January 5: 7pm

Please arrive with a headshot or recent photo and please be dressed to dance, preferably not in baggy clothing. This show features jazz, ballet, and tap dancing, so please bring any of the necessary dance shoes you may already have, otherwise, please wear shoes comfortable to dance in. Please remember to bring a water bottle.

Please prepare 32 bars in the style of the show. You are neither encouraged nor discouraged from singing a song from the show. We’d like to hear whatever showcases you best. If you are singing a song from a different show, please have sheet music in the correct key. An accompanist will be provided. Please, NO backing tracks or a cappella auditions.

Immediately following your song, you will be asked to read a monologue from the show (See links below) Men will read the role of Adam and women will read the role of Eve. You do NOT need to memorize this in advance, in fact we discourage you from doing so. All we ask is that you take time in advance to familiarize yourself with what you are reading and make a strong character choice. These monologues were specifically chosen because they can be played any way you want.

Following vocal auditions, there will be a dance call.

Callbacks will be held on Wednesday January 7 at 7pm. Doors will open at 6:30. Please allow yourself enough time to warm up. Callbacks will begin with a second dance audition.

Women who are called back will be asked to sing “At The Ballet”. Men will be asked to sing “I Can Do That”.

If you are auditioning for the role of Cassie, please become acquainted with “The Music And The Mirror”.

If you would like to audition for Val, please become acquainted with “Dance Ten, Looks Three”.

All actors called back should also be acquainted with the song “What I Did For Love”.
