The Exonerated tells the true stories of six wrongfully convicted, survivors of death row in their own words, using interviews, letters, transcripts, case files and the public record.

Moving between first-person monologues and scenes set in courtrooms and prisons, these six interwoven stories address an American criminal justice system in need of serious reform, told through the words of the brave souls who survived it.

CAST BREAKDOWN:

DELBERT: (M, 60, African-American) A seminary dropout, radical, and poet.  His whole personality is like an old soul song: smooth, mellow, and with an underlying rhythm that never lets up. Actors looking to play Delbert should take care to find his substantial sense of humor, in addition to his obvious depth. Delbert serves as the play’s center, a chorus of sorts. He was convicted in the Deep South of the 1970’s and later freed when evidence surfaced showing him out-of- town when the crime occurred.

SUNNY: (F, 50, Caucasian) A bright, pixieish yoga teacher from California; her lightness and positivity contrast with moments of great depth and clarity. Along with her husband, she spent seventeen years in prison while another man confessed and was ignored by the courts

ROBERT: (M, 30’s, African-American) A former horse groomer from the Deep South; hardened but not lacking a sense of humor. Deep rural Mississippi accent. Spent seven years on death row for murder, before evidence emerges that the victim was found clutching hair from her attacker.

GEORGIA/FEMALE ENSEMBLE 1: (F, 30’s, African-American) Georgia is Robert’s wife, also southern, loudmouthed, outspoken, and extremely warm. Loves to speak her mind.

GARY: (M, 45, Caucasian) A Midwestern hippie and organic farmer. Clearly was in his element in the late 60’s and early 70’s. He is generally good-natured, friendly, and quite smart. Condemned for the murder of his parents and later exonerated when the true killers confessed.

KERRY: (M, 45, Caucasian) A 19 year-old trapped in a 45 year-old’s body. Born and bred in Texas. Kerry was imprisoned for 22 of his 45 years before being exonerated by DNA evidence and is eager to rediscover the world. Always wants to make sure he connects with whomever he is talking to. Strong Texan accent.

DAVID: (M, 40, African-American) A gentle, sad man, born and raised in Northern Florida (otherwise known as Alabama). He has a strong spiritual sense and had aspirations to the ministry before being put on death row at 18. He is continually engaged in a battle between resignation and hope.

SANDRA/SUE/FEMALE ENSEMBLE 2: (F, 40, Caucasian) Sandra is married to Kerry. Sweet and nurturing, loves Kerry dearly and has a great sense of humor about him. She has a strong Texan accent. Sue is married to Gary. Salt of the earth. She s also an organic farmer. Strong upper Midwest accent (a la Fargo)

MALE ENSEMBLE 1&2: (BOTH: M, 30’s-50’s, Caucasian) these actors will play officers, attorneys, suspects, and other supporting characters. Both actors should be good with dialects and characterization. Looking for 2 contrasting types who are highly versatile, and can command attention.
