Princess Ida
The Connecticut Gilbert & Sullivan Society (CG&SS) is seeking a Stage Manager for its October 13th & 14th 2018 production of THE MIKADO.

The Stage Manager will be responsible for working with and assisting our Artistic Director and Musical Director and Choreographer.  The primary function is to understand, and keep detailed notes about, the blocking, musical, and choreographic directions that are being given to our cast during rehearsals and to help assure that the cast is following those directions.  The Stage Manager will also be responsible to observe what the cast is doing throughout the rehearsals, and identify to them weaknesses or mistakes in their execution, and make suggestions on ways to improve the cast’s performance based on what he/she has observed.  During the show the Stage Manager (working with an Assistant Stage Manager) will be responsible for:

  • assuring that Property Master is managing the prop inventory during the show and setting props out where they should be for various scenes,
  • assuring that the stage, set, sound, lighting and house are ready, and that the Technical Director has people in place to move set pieces or actuate set elements as required,
  • assuring that performers are in place and are properly cued,
  • acting as the point person for our Sound Designer, Lighting Designer, Technical Director, Artistic Director, Musical Director, Costumer, Property Master, and Front of House Coordinator to help resolve any issues that may arise in those various areas during the performance.

Full cast rehearsals start the last week in June and are held every Sunday evening 6:00PM to 9:00PM at Congregation Adath Israel, Middletown, CT. There are additional rehearsals for principals on Tuesday evenings 7:00PM to 10:00PM.  Tech week is Oct. 6th-12th and is at the performance venue: the Performing Arts Center at Valley Regional H.S., Deep River, CT.

The candidate for this position should have prior experience as a Stage Manager and performing the functions and duties identified above.  Appreciation of Gilbert & Sullivan comic operettas and experience with Stage Managing a Gilbert & Sullivan production are not essential but are strongly desired and would be a major plus.

Qualified candidates should send an email to John Freedman (, stating their interest along with their CV and a list of references. If available, the email should also include photos, or links to a web site showing examples of their work and/or videos of shows for which they were Technical Director.
