Apples and Oranges Arts is casting roles for a 29-hour staged reading of “DOROTHY” premiering at the SHU Community Theatre in Fairfield, CT. Union and non-union actors are encouraged to apply.
NOTE: Actors must be able to provide their own housing / transportation.
STORYLINE: Based on the life of Dorothy Kilgallen, this new musical follows the ground-breaking, brilliant and pioneering reporter as she attracts intrigue at every turn through her ties with the Kennedy assassination and her glamorous life.
Rehearsal and Production Dates & Locations:
Rehearsals are between 7/18 – 7/22 at the SHU Community Theatre in Fairfield, CT. Actors must be able to provide their own housing / transportation. Producers are seeking a fully vaccinated cast.
DOROTHY: 25 – 40, All ethnicities, female. A headstrong average-looking young woman in her twenties, tenacious and scrappy in demeanor, she moves with poise and grace. She is a tough competitor in an industry dominated by men, but remains cool and calm in all situations. She is very precise and thoughtful, and outwardly prim and proper. She will appear over the age range from a young college woman to a mature 50-something professional. She must be a strong, highly skilled singer with a two octave vocal range. Vocal Range: Mezzo-Soprano
MARC: 25 – 40, All ethnicities, male. A man in his thirties, he has a dual role as Narrator of the play and Dorothy’s hairdresser. He makes no attempt to hide the fact that he is gay, and is the only character to break the fourth wall and speak to the audiences, in both of his roles. Vocal Range: Tenor or Bari-tenor
MOM / FLO / MISS FRANCIS / REPORTER CHORUS: 30 – 45, All ethnicities, female. A woman in her mid-to-late thirties, hers is a no-nonsense personality that sees the world in black and white. She is a devout Catholic with an unwavering sense of right and wrong. She has a strong influence over Dorothy. Vocal Range: Mezzo-soprano or Alto
DAD / PARTY GUEST TWO/ REPORTER CHORUS:30 – 45, All ethnicities, male. A man in his mid-to-late thirties, he is a veteran news reporter who has seen it all. He is pragmatic and even-keeled, slow to anger. He is very proud of Dorothy and her rise to fame. Vocal Range: Baritone
DICK / PARTY GUEST ONE / REPORTER CHORUS:20 – 35, All ethnicities, male. A man in his twenties to early thirties, he is handsome, well-spoken, and outgoing. He is an actor and singer whose career is greatly helped by Dorothy ,whom he marries. He becomes a producer and radio personality in later years. Vocal Range: Tenor or Bari-tenor
JOHNNIE RAY / SINATRA / REPORTER CHORUS:18 – 30, All ethnicities, male. A young man in his early to mid-twenties, he is the famous singer of the 1950’s. He is soft-spoken and lacks self-confidence. He and Dorothy become lovers, although she is fourteen years his senior. In addition to their physical attraction, she is a mother figure and career advisor to him. Vocal Range: Tenor
HERB / MR. CERF / MOBSTER 1 / REPORTER CHORUS:30 – 50, All ethnicities, male. Dorothy’s tough but likeable boss. He must be able to portray characters aged thirty to fifty. Vocal Range: Baritone
MACKIE / THE CHIEF / DEMPSEY / BOB / JOHN DALY / JUDGE / JACK RUBY / NUN: 30 – 50, All ethnicities, male. A very good looking reporter connected to the underworld. He must be able to portray characters aged thirty to fifty. Vocal Range: Bari-tenor plus a good falsetto
KENNEDY/ AL / WML GUEST / GROUCHO / BARTENDER / MOBSTER 2 / REPORTER CHORUS/ NUN:30 – 50, All ethnicities, male. U.S. Congressman, Senator, and President. He must be able to portray characters aged forty to fifty and also be able to do impersonations of famous people. Vocal Range: Bari-tenor plus a good falsetto
