Audition Master Class: Preparing a Successful College Audition

LEARN AUDITION GUIDELINES & TOOLS FOR MUSICAL THEATRE APPLICANTS

Goodspeed’s Audition Master Class is a one-day workshop with Brent Wagner, Emeritus Chair and Professor of the acclaimed Musical Theatre Department at the University of Michigan. Professor Wagner will guide high school students through all aspects of preparing a vocal audition for musical theatre, including analyzing music and lyrics, acting the song, selecting and preparing the music, and understanding audition techniques, particularly for college auditions. Each student will present two songs and will work individually with Professor Wagner, gaining a valuable set of audition tools and techniques for their future in musical theatre.

For high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors only. Limited spaces. Financial assistance may be available.

5:30pm Optional Presentation: “Exploring College Musical Theatre Programs” (Parents Invited)

All students accepted into the Audition Master Class should plan to prepare two 16-bar audition cuts of musical theatre songs to present during the Individual Song Work portions of the class. Students should have the songs fully memorized and prepared to perform in order to receive individualized feedback from Professor Wagner. Each student accepted into the class will be sent additional detailed information on what and how to prepare with their acceptance notification.

ABOUT PROFESSOR BRENT WAGNER

Brent Wagner is the former Chair of the Musical Theatre Department at the University of Michigan, a position he held for 32 years, building the department into one of the most widely respected BFA programs in the nation. Before joining the Michigan faculty, he started the musical theatre program at Syracuse University. Professor Wagner has directed musicals and revues throughout North America, from off-Broadway in New York City to the Banff Center in Alberta, Canada, and for many years he was a teacher/director at the Interlochen Center for the Arts. He has collaborated with lyricist Sheldon Harnick (Fiddler on the Roof) on numerous projects, including a new opera at the O’Neill Theater Center and the world premiere of A Wonderful Life(music by Joe Raposo). Professor Wagner holds and Arthur Thurnau Professorship at Michigan, a distinguished award for outstanding contributions to undergraduate education. He was recently honored by 500 current students and graduates in a concert tribute entitled “Maize and Blue on Broadway” at the August Wilson Theatre in New York City.
