Princess Ida: "Where are your rifles, pray?"
The Connecticut Gilbert & Sullivan Society is looking for an Artistic Director for its October 2017 production of Princess Ida.

CG&SS productions include full sets and staging, professional caliber singers, costumes, and a full orchestra.

The Artistic Director will partner with our Music Director and our Producer to create a shared vision and plan for staging and performing this show. He/she will also work with, and provide direction to, the Cast, Choreographer, Costumer, Property Master, Set Designer, Stage Manager, Lighting Designer, and Sound Designer.

The ideal candidate will have prior experience directing G&S operettas.   He/she should have both an appreciation and fondness for that genre, and for this G&S operetta in particular. While they should stay faithful to Gilbert’s original libretto they must also be able to add innovative touches to the staging and direction that will bring the unique personalities of the various characters and the story line to life and engage the audience.

The Artistic Director must have excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills; a person able to clearly and effectively communicate their vision and directions to the cast and to the production crew.

Auditions and casting for the show will be held in June. Rehearsals with the Music Director, Accompanist and Choreographer are held in Middletown, CT every Sunday evening for chorus and principals. There is an additional evening rehearsal mid-week for just the principals to work on dialog, blocking, and solos (duets, trios, etc.). Rehearsals start in July and run throughout the Summer and early Fall up to the show date.  The show venue is the Performing Arts Center, Valley Regional High School, Deep River, CT.

Qualified candidates should send an email to John Freedman (, stating their interest along with their CV and a list of references. If available, the email should also include links to any videos of shows which they directed.
