After a fight over the family cattle business, Don Pedro and his brother, Don John start to mend fences with a visit to neighboring rancher Leonato. There is friendship and romance in the air until a still disgruntled Don John finds a way to exact some revenge on his brother’s man, Claudio. Will Claudio and Hero’s budding romance survive? What of Beatrice and Benedick? Will adversity bring them together, or push them further apart?

Beatrice – FEMALE – 30’s – 40’s
A strong willed woman, with a sharp wit and spirit. She wages a war of wits against Benedick and often wins the battle.

Benedick – MALE – 30’s – 40’s
Benedick is a soldier recently returned from the war. Benedick is quite charming, always making jokes and puns and carries on a “merry war” of words with Beatrice.

Claudio – MALE – 20’s – 30’s
A young soldier who has recently returned from war who falls in love with Hero upon his return to Messina. He is easily manipulated.

Hero – FEMALE – 20’s – 30’s
Daughter of Leonato and cousin to Beatrice. Hero has the lead in the prank that is played on Beatrice, and is scorned by her betrothed.

Don Pedro – MALE – 40’s – 50’s
An important nobleman, Don Pedro is a longtime friend of Leonato, Hero’s father. Don Pedro is generous, courteous, intelligent, and loyal to his friends.

Leonato – MALE (Possibly FEMALE) – 50+
A well-to-do, elderly noble. Leonato is the father of Hero and the uncle of Beatrice. As governor of Messina, he is second in social power only to Don Pedro.

Don John – MALE – 20’s – 40’s
The illegitimate brother of Don Pedro; sometimes called “the Bastard.” He is the villain of the play.

Margaret – FEMALE – 25 – 30’s
Hero’s serving woman, who unwittingly helps Borachio and Don John deceive Claudio into thinking that Hero is unfaithful.

Borachio – MALE – 25 – 30’s
An associate of Don John. Borachio is the lover of Margaret, Hero’s serving woman. He conspires with Don John to trick Claudio and Don Pedro into thinking Hero has been unfaithful.

Conrad – MALE (Possibly FEMALE) – Late Teens – 30’s
One of Don John’s close associates, entirely devoted to Don John.

Dogberry – MALE (Possibly FEMALE) – Any Age
The constable in charge of the Watch, or chief policeman, of Messina. Dogberry takes his job seriously, but isn’t the brightest.

Verges – MALE (Possibly FEMALE) – Any Age
The deputy to Dogberry. Equally bumbling.

Sexton – MALE (Possibly FEMALE) – Any Age
Leads the trial against the villains.

Antonio – MALE (Possibly FEMALE) – 50’s – 60’s
Leonato’s elderly brother and Hero’s uncle. He is Beatrice’s father.

Balthasar – MALE (Possibly FEMALE) – Any Age
A waiting man in Leonato’s household and a musician. Balthasar helps Leonato, Claudio, and Don Pedro trick Benedick into falling in love with Beatrice. Being able to sing is a plus.

Ursula – FEMALE – Late Teens – 30’s
One of Hero’s waiting women.

Friar Francis – MALE – Any Age
The priest who married the lovers, and is the voice of reason in the show. Compassion, patience, (humor) and stability are keys to his character.
